Here is a link to the AIS track of the
from boatingsf.com news letter.

"Fellow San Francisco Bay Enthusiasts,

Last week we had the most serious environmental catastrophe in San Francisco Bay in more than a decade, when the 902-foot Cosco Busan hit one of the towers of the Bay Bridge and began gushing oil. This ship had just left Oakland and was headed for Pusan, South Korea.

There's all sorts of questions being raised about whether the response was quick enough, and there's no question that it created a serious mess.

We dug out the archives from our AIS receiver, and we've put together a page that shows the animated track of the ship. It's quite amazing: the Cosco Busan is traveling at a good clip, at a sharp angle to the bridge. As it approaches, it makes a sharp turn to head straight for the bridge? straight for the center tower, that is.

Even with the fog, it's hard to understand what happened here. Making it even harder to understand, there was a tug? the 78-foot Revolution? closely following the ship.

We can only guess why this happened; it seems most likely to be a combination of a malfunctioning instrument and more than one person who wasn't paying as much attention as they should have been. You can see the track for yourself. "
