W42 Dodger

nick cherney (Guest)

We have a ketch rigged W42 and would like to build a cockpit enclosure. becasue the traveler and main sheet would be in the way and would prohibit a full enclosure, we are thinking about building a sturdy dodger which we could mount the traveller on, giving plenty of room for a full bimini and enclosure. Have you seen this done, or does anyone have any pictures of such a set up? Thanks, nick

A traveler over the hatch would put the mainsheet too far forward on the boom. Since the traveler on the ketch is on top of the aft cabin, just ahead of the mizzen mast, this would still permit a dodger to go all the way back to the aft end of the cockpit. Look at some of the dodgers on the boats that are for sale on my website. You could also go with a rigid boom vang, and substitute the boom gallows for a strong frame with the traveler track on the frame.

Why not put a bridge traveler over the companionway?

I do have a set of pictures available of one W42 with a hardtop and full cockpit enclosure. Send me an email if you want to see them.
