What

Rig Too Tight?

Lawrence and Mayumi Wheeler

Bud, I keep my standing rigging tight so that Evangeline does well when beating into our trade winds. However, I have noticed that the little step locker at the foot of the bunks in the fo'c'sle has started to separate from the bulkhead by 1/8', and the kingpost under my new compression post shows signs of being pressed down into the ballast. Is the rig too tight? To how many footpounds of compression should each wire be tuned? Where can I find a tuning gauge?

I don't think the rig is too tight. Maybe the support to the ballast top is not sufficient to handle the load. There should not be any load passed onto the step locker from the rig, so that problem may be caused by some other factor. Check with a local sailmaker or rigger for the correct loading of the wires you have. Loos makes a simple tuning gauge. www.loosco.com

Thanks for your advice, Bud. I will check into this further.
