Westsail 28

Aaron Norlund (Guest)

As I've posted in another area, I'm considering a W28 along with W32s and Bristol Channel Cutters for purchase soon. I've had a chance to look at (inside and out) a few W32s and BCCs, but with W28s being so rare, I have not seen one.

I have quite a few pictures of the W28 and in them all it appears that the mast is deck-stepped, but not like I've seen before. It looks like it attaches via a steel rod to a metal pad on the deck. What I'm curious about is whether that metal pad goes down to the keel, in essence, making the mast keel-stepped but easily de-stepped.

Also, how do the boats handle weight in the bow. Specifically, do they have the room and can they deal with 200-300' of 5/16" chain plus some nylon rode and a couple of anchors without plowing waves on a reach? Likewise, how are they with sail storage - is there a sail bin or is that what the vee is for?

Do the boats take to vane steering well?

Thanks for your help!

I answered your post in another area. The boat does steer well with most any windvane.
