Bottom Paint: From Fresh To Salt Water

Warren D. Fraser

I've recently purchased a Westsail 28 which had been in kept in fresh water for a number of years. I'm not sure what is now on the bottom and am wondering how long I have before I should apply new salt-water protective paint. She's been in salt water for 2 months and my plans are to haul her in the early spring, exposing her hull to salt for a total of 8 months.

You might get some growth on the bottom, but you should be able to scrub that off periodically. Check with your local boatyard as to which bottom paint works best in your area. Some brands work better than others, depending on salinity, temperature, type of growth, stc.
