Turning A W32 Into A Sloop

Robert Knox (Guest)

Has anybody tried turning the w32 into a sloop by removing the stay for the staysail? This would make handling the boat easier. What would it do the sailing capacity?

Mike McCoy

If I'm not mistaken mast placement (fore/aft) would preclude simply removing the inner staysail stay.

Many owners have deleted the staysail boom, installed a release lever on the staysail stay, and move the stay back to easily tack with a large jib or genoa. The stay can be set up again to carry a staysail when needed.

Thanks so much, Bud.
Can you talk about how this might change the sailing dynamics of the boat.

Robert,

You should pose that question to Dave King, or possibly Kern Ferguson, the sailmaker.

FLASH... Large inventory of used sailboat equipment, parts & supplies at great prices. After a 10-year circumnavigation in a Westsail 43, the owners are now clearing out all the excess and getting back to life ashore. Outfit your boat with well-kept equipment and save yourself a bunch of cash in the process!
