Temporary Shroud Bracing? Bull Clamps And Wire?

Randell 'Randy' Kocurek

Hey Bud,
I have an idea on how to brace a shroud the marine surveyor did not like (although it dutifully took the hurricane winds of Ike at full force, a direct hit on the shroud, boat tied to concrete hard). The shroud has a sort kink in it about 2 ft. above the top of the turnbuckle. There are no broken strands of wire.
Anyway, I'm not sure what I want to do about terminal fittings or swages, quite yet, and want to rework the standing rigging soon.
Would you criticise someone for bracing an upper port shroud with a 4-6 ft. long section of same size wire rope, fastened at about a half dozen places with what they call bull clamps (I think), or the U'shaped clamps, if that is not their name? We're trying to do a sort of sea trial, and I want to go sailing sorta badly.
Thanks in advance.

Bud Taplin

I personally do not like the idea of clamping a wire onto the existing wire, except in extreme emergency. If you are planning on replacing the wire anyway, and are really concerned about it's strength, then go ahead and clamp another wire to it.

Thanks, Bud,
I finally got hold of a professional rigger here in the area. He agreed to not use the cable clamps for anything but an emergency. Lesson learned.
He also said I could bring the old shroud in and they could do an immediate turnaround.
That's better.
