W43 "Sweet Cheeks"

Robert McQueen

Hi Bud,
I was wondering what you know about a W43 Ketch called "Sweet Cheeks" from Victoria but now in WA. I'm waiting on my re-enlistment bonus while deployed in Iraq, and as soon as I get the cash it'll be gone... I've been onboard with the broker to have a look around, makes my S2 27 look like a cheap camper.

Also, I'm wondering what the dimensions are for the Shipmate 3 burner since I'd like to replace it with a Dickinson diesel model.
Do you do surveys, or know someone in the SEATAC area that has done surveys for BoatUS?
BTW, how many 43's are Ketch rigged?

Robert,  I believe that I saw the boat when we had a Westsail rendezvous in Poulsbo a few years ago.  From the pictures on the ad, she appears to be very well maintained, with lots of equipment, and in good condition.  I have never done a survey on the boat previously, but will be in Pt. Townsend, WA the end of August for the Westsail rendezvous.  I could do the survey for you then, but you will probably want to make purchase arrangements sooner.  She appears to be an extremely good value at the asking price.I do not know how many W43's were rigged as ketches, but there were some others.  You should be able to find a Dickinson diesel stove that will fit in the compartment.  The boat was factory finished.

Thanks Bud.

Bud,
I'd like to get one of your service manuals, what would be the best way to get my paws on one? I'll have my military mailing address here in Iraq in a few weeks, and for payment I can do a check mailed directly from my bank (cashiers I think?) or debit, EFT, I don't have paypal.

Do your service manual have an illustrated parts breakdown or do you have a seperate catalog for that?

Robert, I can mail you a copy of my Westsail Service Manual. Send me an email with your mailing address.

The service manual does have a breakdown of parts for the items in it. If you want a complete breakdown of the construction of a W43, I have a copy of the 290 page Westsail 43 factory construction manual. Sorry it is not scanned into a file, so I would have to have a copy made and mail it to you. It will fit in a Priority Mailing box.

Hi from near Poulsbo. If you are looking right away, we can recommend Alain Vilage of Port Townsend (about 45 minutes away from Poulsbo.) His website is: http://www.ptmarinesurvey.com/

He did our 42 when we bought. He's acredited & experienced including a lot of sailing experience. On ours, he did a very thorough job and was generous in talking with us while he did it. The report was plenty detailed & had lots of pictures to go along with. They are set up to email or direct send electronically signed copies to you and any insurers you specify etc.

He did not do anything regarding engine functionality - just visual and the fact that it did run - and also only looked at the rig 'from deck level.' We took care of our questions on those things separately.

He is seen around here as an 'owners surveyor'... not some of the agents & brokers favorite. He does call it like he sees it... doesn't work to a number.

If you want more info, you can contact us direct.

One caveat - he'll be cut off from the direct route to Poulsbo due to a major bridge rebuild between 5/1 to about 6/15 - and the work around is passenger-only with about a 45 minutes each way time addition.

Congrats on your new boat - hope to see you at the rendezvous's.

Bud,
I'll get that addy emailed to you when I can verify it's good, and I'd love a copy of the factory manual as well.

Julie & John,
Thanks for the reference, I've bookmarked his page for when the time comes. I've got my fingers crossed that someone won't place a bid before the Army gets my bonus to the bank, they have been getting better at paying but not record setting yet...
The 45 min commute, is that by ferry?

Robert McQueen

Bud,
I should have that address for you in about a week, also the broker informed me that the hull number is #33. Would you happen to have any info on it?

Stephen and Lu Ann Yoder

Robert,
Excuse me butting in here, but I see that part of your question went unanswered (unless it was answered back-channel). So, yes, the 45 minute commute referred to is by ferry.

Robert, My records show that the current owner is at least the fourth owner, however I have not been in contact with him at all. I talked with and sold parts to a previous Canadian owner, but never did a full survey on the boat.

Robert McQueen and Olivia Thompson

What parts did you sell to the Canadian owner? I'm starting a to do list in addition to the minor fixes from the survey.

Just a few small items to keep the boat running, and that was back in 2002.

Bud,
How tall is the mizzen mast? and what are the heights to the spreaders on both the main and mizzen masts? I'm roughly estimating how many steps to buy for a future project.

Robert,
I do not have a copy of the sailplan for the W43 Ketch. I do have the sailplan for the W42 ketch, and the masts should be about the same.

The standard 50' mainmast is mounted on the cabintop and has single spreaders, and they are at 25'-6" above the base.

The standard mizzen was stepped through the cabintop to the sole on the W42, and did not have spreaders. The mast was 31' above the aft cabintop, and the lower shrouds were 22'-6" above the cabintop.
