Interior Varnish On Factory Westsails?

Mike McCoy

I want/need to do a little touch up on the interior mahogany/teak in the high traffic areas, i.e. places like the most inboard side of the icebox, companionway steps, etc. I plan to sand first, then varnish. I'm not needing to revarnish *everything* so I want the newly varnished areas to match the old as best as possible.

Was the original varnish used on factory Westsails clear or 'Amber'?

Or, given how varnish ages darker over time think I should use an amber varnish anyway?

Bud Taplin

Westsail never did use any varnish on the interior. They used oil, sometimes Watco, and sometimes a clear oil. It was much more expedient to oil the interior, and let the buyers do any varnishing they wanted.

You will need to experiment to determine what will match.
