Sailboat Manufacturers Mass Extinction Event

Frank and Melanie Scalfano

Do you think the current economic crisis is likely to result in a lot of boat manufacturers going under? The automotive industry seems to be entering a mass extinction event.

Reading the trade magazines that I receive regularly, there have been major layoffs at many of the boatbuilders. Also, there have already been some shops close down. The boating industry will have a tough time.

Frankly, I am waiting for MY billon dollar bailout check to be sent to me, as promised by my congressman.

So can one assume that the value of previously sailed boats will increase????

Bud Taplin

Not always. The values of the W32's have increased since the original construction, as they usually sell for more now thirty years old than when they were first built. More a case of the condition and upgrading of a particular boat the determines the value.
