Propane Tanks

Hey All-
I have lockers built ahead of the companionway that are sized just right for an 11lb tank- that is also where the propane line goes from the stove. Unfortunately, I just got an insurance survey and the surveyor dinged me on the fact that I am using vertical tanks in a horizontal application. So, I am looking for 11 lb steel horizontal tanks, which measure 9.5 inches in diameter and about 17 to the top of the collar- steel for the cost perspective- Here are my two questions-

Anyone know of a source?

Is it possible to convert vertical to horizontal by changing the pickup tube in the tank? Thanks!

Bud Taplin

I believe that the only difference between a vertical and horizontal mounted tank should be the location of the inside of the pickup tube. However I may be wrong, and you should probably contact the tank manufacturer.

John go to:

click on the link to Propane Tanks and download the pdf file. Page 31 has listed all sorts of aluminum and steel marine lpg tanks. Also listed are rail mounting kits, regulators gauges solonoids and just about everything you need to install lpg on a boat. Cheers. Tom

I have also heard that if you shop in the RV arena you can find much variety and much cheaper than 'marine' grade. Their tanks are fiberglass and they have both lateral and verticle. I thought I saved a link somewhere a while back but I can't find it.
