Masthead Sheeves

George and Rayna Shaunfield

Bud, I have cleaned, used emory cloth on until shiney, applied metal primer, and painted the two aluminum plates that divide the three sets of sheeves at the masthead on my W28. (One each fore and aft sheeve being a set.) They had never been painted before.

I am getting ready to clean the sheeves and clevis pins through them. What is best to lubricate the sheeves? Sailkote? Something like Permatex Anti-Seize Lubricant (which is waterproof)? Something else?

I did not find any reference in the Service Manual or any prior message board thread, though I could have missed something either place.

I hope not to step on Bud's toes, but i notice others answer questions directed at him too, so...

Any waterproof wheel bearing grease will be fine. We use marine grade synthetics, such as SuperLube Lubricating Grease, or Lewmar's winch grease. Even better is to use sheaves with Oilite bronze bushings so no lubricant is needed.

Any good waterproof grease will work well.
