Serial Numbers

Stephen and Lu Ann Yoder

Were any W32s built without the serial numbers stamped into the starboard side of the stern? I saw a W32 in Newport (OR) this weekend. She was backed into her slip so it was easy to check the number. But it wasn't there. Not on the port side either. But this was definitely a Westsail. What the....?

I don't have a number on my exterior. I think a previous owner filled it with epoxy or something. This seems to happen often when boats are repainted, despite it being illegal to "remove" the HIN.

Follow the link below to an old thread on this forum about HINs.

Hull numbers and production

The requirement for marking a hull with the HIN did not come into effect until sometime in 1973. The early Kendalls and W32's were not marked. I believe it started with about #60. And some are filled in due to a paint job, but they need to be remarked. I have almost all of the numbers in my records.
