Westsail 32 Decals

Don Montgomery and Lana Nelson

I am going to have a new set of Westsail 32 decals made for my boat. I am certain that they will cost less per set if several sets are made. Let me know if you have an interest and I will get a quote after I know the quanity.

Tom Crank

What size and for what application. Do you have a mock up? I may well be interested.

Terry Shoup

Do you have a picture or a drawing? Where do they go on the boat?

Norm Rhines

Don

I might be in, But I would need to see the (artwork) - Drawing of the decals before confirming.

Terry I believe the decals were located on the sides of the house between the third and forth portlite up from astern.

Stephen and Lu Ann Yoder

On the W28, the decals are located on the bulwarks about midway between bow and stern. Ours are still on although peeling away.

David and Jill Alberson

I am interested in the decals.. By the way, what font did Westsail use for the decals, sail numbers, etc?

Don Montgomery and Lana Nelson

Ok, I have quotes on the decals but we need to order 8 sets to get a price brake. Send me an email and I will forward the file to you with the quote and the font.

Greg and Christy Johnson

Count me in for a set. By the way an example of the decal is on the disc from Bud.

I have the artwork if needed for the decals

Michael McDiarmid

While looking at a W32 on Yachtworld.com, I think I see the decal that you all are talking about. I had not noticed one before. If you look at the full specs of the boat, you will see the decal just below the caprail amidship.

Terry Shoup

Looks good -- I'm in! let me know where to send the money (and how much to send.)

Don Montgomery and Lana Nelson

Please send me an email if you wish to be included in the group buy for the decals. I will respond to your email with a PDF file of the actual artwork and a price list. The file on the CD from Bud has a different font for the "T" in Westsail. I think the entire word should be in the same font as it is in the Westsail logo. It is all in the file that I will send to those that reply with an email to dlmont2@aol.com

Bud Taplin

Don, The artwork I have on the CD was traced off of a decal on a Westsail. It is the same as the logo file used originally by Westsail. However, the T letter used by the WOA is different from that used by Westsail.
Need to choose which one looks better, or is more "authentic".
Maybe you should ask the Association to contribute, and have them available for sale at rendezvous. This was done in the past, and they all sold out. They were made in both black for white sheers, and white for dark sheers.

Terry Shoup

I'm willing to involve some WOA funds for the project. Let me know if you want to go this route.

Terry Shoup
WOA Treasurer

Don Montgomery and Lana Nelson

I would be more than willing to purchase a set if the association had them available. Let me know what you would like to do Terry and I will forward the names of those interested if you wish.

Bud,

Any idea why the "T" is in a different font than the rest of the letters in Westsail? Seems odd but maybe there was a good reason for it.

Bud Taplin

Lynn Vick, who was the wife of the couple that started the company was also in the advertising business, and she had great talent in picking just the right advertising items. I believe that the maybe the T with the extra piece on the bottom did not fit well in the logo, and that is maybe why she changed it.

Fred K. Cheney

I have a set of decals that Rick Kennerly (the Mouseherder) made for me a while back (haven't got around to applying them to the boat yet) They are in the style of the WOA lettering. After looking at the original with the different "T" I have to admit that I like the first one better - the letters are more tightly spaced and the different "T" kind of pulls it together more... (Plus its the authentic original design!) just my 2 worth... Or did the WOA change it on purpose because the original is a registered trademark?

Terry Shoup

As far as I know, WOA didn't make any changes, but I haven't got the history some other folks may have on this. From the little I know about law, making the change in the letter T wouldn't have any effect on trademark infraction, so I doubt that was the reason.

I kind of like the style WOA uses, with all letters in the same font. Looks like maybe WOA will be taking over the project, so we'll need to come to some consensus before I place an order.

Terry Shoup
WOA Treasurer

Stephen and Lu Ann Yoder

My vote would be for the original T because it is the original.

Don Montgomery and Lana Nelson

I just looked a a couple of Westsail addvertising pieces and non of them had the word Westsail with a mixed font. Also the advertising pieces were in a different font altogether than the one we are discussing. A couple of questions. Did the Westsail boats come from the factory with decals on them or was this something someone fabricated post production? Where did the font for the Westsail owners association come from? Perhaps someone has some original liturature or original photos of boats when new that can assist in defining original and authentic for these decals. I am only trying to get to the point of defining original. I am certainly in for one set in white as long as they are no longer than 17" and 2" tall. A little detective work should be able to solve this. I tend to like the letters all in the same font.

Stephen and Lu Ann Yoder

I'm basing my notion that the mixed font is original on the fact that I have (had...they've worn off but the image remains) the mixed font on my factory W28, it also appears on the W32 listed on Ychtworld (referenced above) and the fact that that's how it appears on Bud's construction CD.

To my eye, the mixed font looks better than the one used on the WOA website. More balanced somehow.

I believe the more balance look is what Lynn Vick wanted when she changed the T slightly.

Don Montgomery and Lana Nelson

What is the status of the decals? I will be ready for mine in 7 - 10 days.

Thanks

James & Jacqueline Best

I am interested in a set of decals for a 32, with black letters

Norm Rhines

rumor has it that the WOA is going to do the decals?

I would like to put my order in for the original T style and in Black
Don asked me to post here as he is under the impression that the WOA is going to have some of these made . I hope this is true.

In any case I hope all turns out. Not sure who is the new contact?

So I will keep reading on this thread and see where it goes.

Fair wind to all:

Terry Shoup

Sorry I've let this go, but I've been swamped at work the past couple of weeks. Yes, WOA is going to coordinate a group buy in order to take advantage of bulk discounts. I'll try to get some sort of a timeline posted here by the first of the week. I'd like to get a count of how many folks are seriously interested, and which boat models (28, 32, 39, 42, & 43) folks want. You can post here or email me at <westsaior@earthlink.net>

Norm Rhines

Thanks Terry:

Please put me down for one set (Westsail32) in Black with the original T in the middle. Don noted about 40.00 for a pair if we order 8 or more.

No rush as I to am busy.

I think you have my Address just let me know what is up and when it happens, and let me know where to send the check and how much. Hope you are gearing up for sailing season, I am getting out this Sunday.

Thanks again:

Terry Shoup

One of the things I should have included in my previous post is this: Which "T" do we want? I don't know which is original and which is not. Bud seems to feel (and he should know) that the block "T" is the one that was used by Westsail Corp. on the boats. Let's call that "Block T" and the one in the same font as the other letters "Stylized T", so there's less room for misunderstanding. This is starting to sound like the Democratic primary race!

Stephen and Lu Ann Yoder

I'm in for a pair of W28 decals, in white with the Block T.

-Steve

Terry Shoup

Just got home from work and picked up an email from the supplier of the decals. We can mix boat sizes (e.g., 28 & 32) in the same order and still qualify of bulk discounts, but all have to be of the same color, due to the amount of waste on a roll of material.

If I order 16 sets (enough for 16 boats at 2 decals per boat) the cost to WOA is $35 a set plus shipping. WOA can sell them for that, plus whatever it would cost to ship them from here (Redlands CA) to wherever you are.

From the few responses I've had so far, it looks like the "Block T" is the preferred style. Most of the boats I've seen have a colored whale stripe (I think that's what it's called) just below the cap rail, which is where the original decals were placed, so white would work.

Let me know if you're interested and I can try to put an order together next week, before I leave for the 2008 SoCal WOA Rendezvous.

<westsailor@earthlink.net>

Don Montgomery and Lana Nelson

WooHoo! I will take a set in white with the block "T" in the dimensions that were submitted. I think it was like 17" X 2". Also, I was looking through some documents that had been tucked away on Mary Rose and found and original marketing brochure. It has the block "T" in it where Westsail is used in all caps. So that is a great confirmation that the block "T" is authentic and original. Let me know how to handle shipping and payment information.

Colleen Crystal

Terry - I'll take exactly the same as Steve Yoder, W28, in white. (sorry didn't read this thread before, thought you were only ordering for the 32's).
Thanks!
Colleen

Terry Shoup

OK, I have enough requests for white to get a discount. I'll put the order in this week, and should have them in a week or so -- I'll post a note when they're here, along with information on final cost.

I only have requests for two in black so far, so I might hold off on those for a bit.

Terry Shoup

Might have found a less expensive source. I'll check it out and post info here as soon as I can.

Terry, Have I got a deal !! Great price on orders of five sets each of black or white. That way they have almost no scrap from a standard sheet of vinyl. Claims the vinyl should last 10 years or so, even in the sun. Besides, the shop is around the corner from my home in Huntington beach. No shipping cost to get them. He found the font for the letters, and also found the font for the block T. He needs to find the font for the numbers, but said he should be able to find it, or scan in the numbers I have. Anytime we need more decals, they can be ordered in sets of five at the same price. Other colors are available, but also have to be ordered in sets of five.

Bud Taplin

The letters are 2" high, and the total length is 16-1/2". Cost to be announced soon.

Rich Morpurgo
(Member)

can I ask how tall these are? I haven't seen a boat with them, so don't have an idea.

I would be interested in a white set, depending on price.

rich

Terry Shoup

I should have the decals some time this coming week. Cost will be $25.00 for a set of two (one for each side of the boat.) I'll have WS32 and WS28 in white and WS32 in black. I based this on the requests I had gotten up to the time I placed the order.

If you'd like a set, send me a check made out to Westsail Owners Association, along with your specific request and mailing address. My address is:

WOA
c/o Terry Shoup
254 East Fern Avenue, Suite 102
Redlands CA 92373-6071

Don Montgomery and Lana Nelson

The check is in the mail for my set. Nice work! Thanks!

Julie & John Steveley

Is there an option for a 42 version? Maybe on the next run? And are you still considering any to be available to go out to the rendezvous?

Terry Shoup

I need to touch base with the supplier, but it's my understanding that he can do a run of five sets and give us the good price, but all have to be the same color and the same boat size. I'll check again and post what I learn here.

I'd like to be able to have some available at rendezvous, but the problem we run into is the cost of shipping stuff out and then shipping back what doesn't sell, plus the fact that we don't have a lot of cash to tie up in inventory that doesn't sell fairly quickly.

Stephen and Lu Ann Yoder

Terry,
My decals showed up in yesterday's mail. They look great. Thanks.
-Steve

Don Montgomery and Lana Nelson

Terry,
Mine also arrived and look great. Nice work!
Thank you!

Don and Lana

Aaron Norlund

Hey all,

Someone please take a picture of one of the decals, either on the boat or still on the paper; I'm setting the WOA online store up and would like a picture of the decals so people know what they're buying!

Fair leads!
Aaron N.

Terry Shoup

I have them on my boat now (OK I have one on the side facing the dock) so I'll take a shot of it this coming weekend and post it as well as send it to you.

Aaron Norlund

Terry,

I appreciate it. I've just spent the past few hours reformatting the store; I just have to add the decals and it'll be ready to go online again.

When would be a good time to talk to get the account information corrected; it is still linked with Louis' account.

Cheers,
Aaron N.

Dfharris02

Hi:

Are these still available to purchase?

Thanks,

David

Contact Terry Shoup, the WOA treasurer. I believe he still has some from the last ones that were made.

Colleen Crystal

David - I have a couple of the decals left. Are you looking for black or white? I think I may only have white ones. Email me: colleen@westsail.org

Colleen

Jean Bourgeois

Collen,
Would you have in stock a pair of Westsail32 decals

Bud Taplin
(Member)

Colleen dropped off a bunch of stuff she had, and there are lots of decals in both black and white for the W32, and some for the W28. Let me know if you want any.
