Fuel Cells

Frank and Melanie Scalfano

I have read several posts about inexpensive generator set-ups and solar panels, but I wonder if any of our members have any experience or inside info on the possibility of inexpensive fuel cells being available for boating purposes in the near future. I have read prognostications of their eminent availability for at least a decade, and it would seem that a boat would be a perfect application.

I've looked at them off-an-on. Certainly interesting, but I suspect they are very pricy. I've never seen any firm price listing other than references to 5000 euros. Also I've not seen a price on the cartridges which only last 3 days for a cruising yacht on the hook.

We tend to stay in developed areas which is why I'm considering them. The typical tropical cruiser probably has no chance of finding replacement fuel. I'm definitely looking forward to other posts with more info though!
