Scott: I replaced our boomkin last year with high grade straight grain quarter-sawn douglas fir. Worked out well, looks great and was relatively easy to do. I had to dry it properly, sealed it with penetrating epoxy and then, varnished it with a number of coats before attaching the hardware. With all I've read Douglas fir is good for these applications due to its strength to weight ratios and, it has a good record regarding natural rot resistance due to its resins.
