Aaron,

I can't remember if it was in Bud's Service Manual or on the board, but somewhere I recall reading about some people having trouble getting air in the water pickup line when in bigger waves or healed over, perhaps while motorsailing. Don't recall all the details as to what caused the problem but the solution was to move the engine pickup to the bilge. I moved mine to the aft end of the bilge below the companionway steps. Not sure if the attached strainer would work there. I used a groco seacock with a short hose to a groco strainer.

I think the air in the line resulted in some overheating. Perhaps someone else will remember the details and chime in.
