My main is sheeted to the end of the boom, and I don't have a traveler. Down side is I can't set the main flat and then move it off to leeward; plus side is it doesn't take much muscle to sheet it in, since the moment arm of the lever is long.

I took a class though North Sails some time back and learned to use the traveler. I sail on a friend's Catalina 38 quite often, and we can do stuff with his boat that I can't do with mine. On the other hand, I'll take mine when the wind pipes up and the seas climb any day!!!
