Terence, You should have a 1" shaft. You should not have to modify the rudder opening if you shorten the shaft. The front of the hub of any feathering prop has to be right up close to the bronze housing for the bearing. Otherwise the aft tips of the prop hit the rudder when the blades are feathered and you turn the rudder.

The other alternative is to leave the shaft alone, and cut the opening in the rudder to clear the blades, and fiberglass over the cut.
