This is from Kern in an article in the Fall 2002 Windblown:

"As for track placement for the free footed sail, I would like to see it sheeted 3 feet aft of the mast and 3 feet out from the center of the deck. Put a 3 foot long track with the center at this position. You will notice that this track will go right where your handrail is. If you have an old style deck, place it just inside by 2 inches, and if you have the new style, just outside by a couple inches."
