I will have to retract some of what I said in my last post, after talking with a very knowledgable person regarding winch covers.

They will trap moisture, and since so many winches are aluminum, then the moisture can cause more corrosion than being left out in the open. The other factor is that in hot climates under a winch cover, the grease in the winch can soften and run out (that is if you have ever bothered to grease your winches).

I guess you make your choice, and take your chance, but you should regularly take the winch apart and clean and lightly lube it.
