I have a question that I have wondered about for a long time, even if it is not of great importance and has not kept me up at night. Is there any real reason to have a cover on your winches? It seems to me that unless they were totally waterproof they would not be of any use at all, and in fact would promote corrosion by keeping the winch wet. Are they the nautical equivalent of a toaster cozy?
